After five years captivating audiences throughout the Boston area, Lenny’s Funk Club is excited to announce their debut EP, Day Of, now live on all platforms. Combining elements of alternative rock, funk-pop, and jazz fusion, the four-song collection showcases the range of aesthetic influences and emotional spaces that inform the group’s collaborative songwriting process. Virtually all of the EP was recorded live on a single day, with the goal of recreating the live sound that Lenny’s fans have grown to know and love.
Day Of marks a major milestone for the nine-member collective, whose roots trace back to high school in Cambridge, MA. Originally created to fill a need for in-person connection and music-making during the early COVID-19 pandemic, Lenny’s Funk Club has evolved into a prominent local act, playing venues such as The Lilypad and The Middle East Upstairs, and opening for the likes of Magnificent Danger and Velvet Dirtmunchers. Their performances feature expressive vocals, intricately layered arrangements, blistering solos, and a tasteful touch of goofiness. Underlying the infectious energy they bring to the stage are deep friendships that double as strong musical bonds, fostering an atmosphere of trust and camaraderie that can be felt at any Lenny’s show.
While members of the band continually experiment with many musical styles, Day Of begins to consolidate their influences and hints at the direction the band is headed. Each of the four tracks strikes a delicate balance between the candid storytelling of lead singer Abby Jarcho (who co-authored three of the songs), and the bold intensity of the full ensemble sound. “CWT” welcomes the listener with its hypnotic funk groove, followed by the seething shuffle of “Like Your Face”—complete with a greasy and unbridled tenor saxophone solo by Emma Blanc. The driving, punk-inspired “(Not) A Good Sign” comes next, featuring Jared Cruz on guitar, and finally the relentless epic “Asphodel,” with trombonist Lewis Bryant delivering a compelling closing statement. The band’s powerful five-piece horn section features prominently throughout the EP, laying down a lush and sensitive backdrop to Jarcho’s vocals and punctuating songs with deafening climaxes, while the effortlessly tight rhythm section holds everything together.
Day Of is now available for purchase on Bandcamp, and can be streamed on all major platforms!
